It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gary L Shafer who passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Elkhart General on Thursday July 9, 2026 at the age of 66.
Gary was born on September 4, 1959 in South Bend, IN to the late Art & Marilyn Shafer. Gary was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother and best friend to many. Gary was known for his sense of humor and never went a moment without letting a joke pass by.
Gary graduated from Concord High School in 1978. Gary enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Indiana Hoosiers and Notre Dame. Gary enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in all their sporting, cheer and theater events. He never missed a one! Gary cherished every moment spent with family, friends and his beloved pup Harley. You could find Gary riding his bicycle down the Pumpkin Vine trail on any given day, or sitting in his favorite chair watching a game and go trolling the remote.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Joan Shafer. Daughter Nikki (Adam) Behne, Son Jimmy (Kimberly) Maggert, Son Jeremy (Emily) Maggert and Daughter Sarah (Anthony) Gangwer He was the best Ya-Ya to his 9 grandchildren Evan, Lukas, Camren, Paxtin, Lyndon, Tanner, Bella, Luxley, Landry. Sister Sandra (Tim) Wallin, Brother Dave (Linda) Shafer, Sister Karen Beck. Along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gary was proceeded in death by his parents, along with his in laws Russell (Buck) and Lois Hetrick
A Celebration of Life will be held at the home of Jeremy and Emily Maggert on July 15th from 3-6pm at 21390 Cheri Lane Bristol, IN 46507.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in the memories we shared and the lasting impact Gary had on so many lives. Gary will forever be remembered with love.
