Charles Bower Obituary

 

ELKHART-Charles “Chuck” W. Bower, 77, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct 4, 2020 at his home.  

He was born on February 9, 1943, in Elkhart to Betty J. Crofoot and Charles W. Gage.  

On June 29, 1962 he married Connie J. Drudge, his high school sweetheart.  

She survives along with their children, Charles (Melody) Bower, Cathi (Mike) Auger, and Chris (Amy) Bower. Four grandchildren, Brittany (Chris) Coffee, Nathan (Crissy) Bower, Megan Auger, and Matthew Auger. There is also a great grandchild due in November 2020. Taffy Ergle his sister also survives. He was preceded in death by his mother Betty Bower, and a sister, Rebecca Bower.  

Chuck graduated from Elkhart High School in 1961 and Bethel College in 1968. Chuck was a teacher in the Elkhart Community Schools, a sportswriter at The Elkhart Truth, and spent his final 33 working years as a purchasing agent in the manufactured housing industry.  He retired in 2006, and spent 10 more years working part-time for Associated Delivery Systems.  

Chuck was an avid bicycle rider, and logged over 100,000 road miles since 1977, one of his great accomplishments.  He also enjoyed canoeing, kayaking, and cross-country skiing. He played drums in local dance bands for 25 years, and was a fan of music from the 1940’s and 50’s.  He could always be found at his grandchildren’s numerous events, always there to cheer and support them. Chuck enjoyed time around the pool, which he shared with his faithful furry four-legged friends—Abby and Wrigley.  

The family will welcome visitors from 2-4 pm on Sunday, October 11, 2020, at the Omega Event Center, 2120 Middlebury St, Elkhart, a celebration of life service will begin at 4 p.m.

Inurnment will be held at a later date at Hope Mausoleum in Rice Cemetery.  

 Elkhart Cremation Services is entrusted with his care.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be given to the Elkhart County Humane Society, or the Center for Hospice Care
