Obituary

SOUTH BEND-Charles J. Piper (85) of South Bend, IN. formerly of Elgin, IL. died April 17, 2023. He passed away at the Center of Hospice Care surrounded by many of his family members. Charlie was son to Dorathea and Charles Piper of Chicago, IL. As a young boy in Chicago he would shine shoes for 15 cents to make money. His work ethic continued and he began his career with Western Electric in Chicago where he met the love of his life, the late Frieda (Gossan) Piper. Charlie was a proud member of the Army National Guard. He spent 35 years working for the Western Electric in IL. and Ameritech Services in SouthBend, IN. as well as working as a handyman for anyone that needed his help. That man could fix just about anything and he shared his knowledge with his children, especially his son. He instilled the love of the outdoors; hiking, camping, swimming, canoeing in his children and the many youth he inspired while involved in the Boys Scouts of America. Charlie deeply believed in the BSA organization and became involved when his son was a cub scout. Charlie was a webelos leader, a Scoutmaster for Troop 2 in Elgin, IL. He was activities Chairman for his district, Scoutmaster for Philmont High Adventure, Asst. Scoutmaster at National Jamboree to name just a few. He loved his time with his “Rat Pack” buddies at the World Jamborees. He received/earned the following because of his service in Boys Scouts of America; member of Order of the Arrow, Woodbadge beads, the Lamb Award, the Charles Pierce Burton Award and the Silver Beaver to name a few. He served for many years on the Board of Education and Church Boards of St. Johns Lutheran School and Church in Elgin, IL. and St. Pauls Lutheran Church in South Bend, In. His passing will leave a hole in the hearts of his children; Chuck (Melinda) Piper, Kathy Gramly, Mary (Troy) Teets, Dana (David) Dulfon. Thanks Dad most of all for teaching us about Jesus, we will see you in Heaven someday! Forever remembered by his grandchildren and great children; Caren Barnes (Chaeli, Brayden), Charlene (Jason) Rose (Alexis, Raegan, Zander, Gabriella), Charles (Vitella) Piper (Emma, Annabelle, Mindy, Luna), Jennifer (Chris) Cornell (Landon, Logan), Joshua Teets and Jacob Teets, Gina Dulfon and Renee Dulfon as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and great neighbors!
