Elizabeth Hartman Obituary

Elizabeth Ann “Betsie” Hartman died on February 15, 2024, at the age of 74. Betsie was born June 3, 1949 in Chicago, grew up in Highland IN, and spent her last decades in Elkhart IN. She had a lifelong string of major health issues but held steadfast in her Christian faith. She graduated from Highland High School.  She accumulated credit hours from several different colleges and finally got an Associate of Applied Science degree - with honors - in Computer Science from Ivy Tech Community College in Elkhart. Betsie tutored computer students at Ivy Tech for about eight years.

Her first marriage was to Joe Thiel of Griffith, IN, whom she met on Purdue's Calumet campus. Her second marriage was to Don Hartman of Elkhart, whom she met at the Hesston [IN] Steam Engine Museum. Betsie and Joe had one daughter, Lisa Marie Thiel. Betsie's Elkhart home was always a great gathering place for neighborhood kids and for Lisa's friends.

Betsie was preceded in death by her husband, Don Hartman; parents, Ruth and Wally Hertwig; grandparents, Robert and Ethel Hull, Raymond and Walda Hertwig; and cousin, Jack Ferguson. Betsie is survived by her brother, Tom Hertwig (Kaye); cousin, Jeanette Ferguson Nestor (Gary); daughter, Lisa Thiel Lindsey and her husband Johnny, and their children, Jerry Thiel (Taylor), Kenzie Smith, and Chance Lindsey (Tatianna).

Betsie made friends easily, including at Elkhart's Northside Baptist Church where she participated in several of their annual Passion Plays. Betsie loved to tease and be teased. Teasing within the family often involved either hippos or spiders. Betsie loved the outdoors, and Colorado was her favorite vacation destination. She had a charitable heart for friends and animals. She loved cats, and a great way to remember Betsie would be to donate to cat rescue or Elkhart County Humane Society in Elkhart, IN.

Elkhart Cremation Services has been entrusted with Betsie’s care.
