Harley C. Morton of Elkhart, Indiana, formerly a long-time resident of rural Fort Madison, Iowa, passed away at his home on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at the age of 75 years. A devout follower of Christ, Harley was a devoted husband, admirable father, engaging grandfather, and friend to man.
He was born November 16, 1946, and married his loving wife, Janet (Rose) Morton, on March 14, 1970. Harley attended Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ in Denmark, Iowa for more than 65 years where he was an active member and Sunday school teacher.
After attending college, Harley worked as a farmer, a locomotive engineer for the BNSF Railway, and as an officer for the local Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He also served the community as a township trustee for Lee County, Iowa, a sexton for Fairview Cemetery, and as a local school board president.
Harley enjoyed family snow skiing, fishing, and travel trips. Whether mending fence, growing Christmas trees, raising his herd of bison, or chopping firewood, Harley relished working outdoors. He was also a capable carpenter and avid reader who continually gained knowledge, learned new skills, and mentored his adoring grandkids with humor and wisdom.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Janet; two daughters, Melanie (Jason) Lesko, of Sherman, IL and Amanda (Adam) Richman, of Bremen, IN; six grandchildren, Rachel Lesko, Rebekah Lesko, Raegan Lesko, Hunter Richman, Reese Richman, and Cal Richman; two brothers, Kevin (Carolyn) Morton of Clyde, OH, and Russell (Vicki) Morton, of Kirbyville, MO; one brother-in-law, John Rose, of Sierra Vista, AZ; a nephew, three nieces, and several cousins. Harley was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy (Mecklenburg) Morton, his father, S. Craig Morton, a sibling, and beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.
A remembrance and interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Lee County, Iowa at a later date. Memorials have been established for Fairview Cemetery, and the Denmark Congregational UCC Memorial Committee, and the Denmark Fire & Rescue.
