ELKHART-Ingeborg Caskey, age 89, after fighting a 5-year battle with Alzheimer’s, passed away on December 14th, 2020, at Eastlake Nursing Home in Elkhart, Indiana, due to complications from COVID-19. Inge was born September 7, 1931, to Moritz and Maria (Baumhauer) Gurfinkel in Stuttgart, Germany. Both Inge and her father were Holocaust survivors. She emigrated to the United States in 1956.
Sometime after arriving in the United States she met the love of her life and husband of 60 years, Lloyd Caskey, and they were married in 1958 in Detroit, Michigan.
Inge was a stay-at-home mom to the couples’ two children for many years before returning to school and earning her degree from Goshen College. She then returned to the workforce as a substitute teacher and later took a job with the Elkhart County Family and Children’s Services Division, where she worked until retirement. She was also a member of the Bristol Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary for many years, while her husband, Lloyd, was a Volunteer Fireman and Certified Emergency Medical Technician.
One of Inge’s biggest passions was traveling, and she and Lloyd tried to take a trip at least once a year. They loved to travel to the West Coast, and her favorite road to travel was “Route 66”!
She is survived by her son Thomas (Donna) Caskey, daughter, Tamara (Eric) Brown, and a host of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Inge was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, and her parents.
A private memorial service will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Elkhart Center for Hospice Care.
Elkhart Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements.
