James M Hurley, 77 of South Bend, IN passed away after a very courageous battle with Cancer, COPD, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Heart Disease, Friday, Jan 2, 2026. James was born in South Bend, In. October 30, 1948, to Jasper (Jack) and Kathleen Hurley (O'Donnell) and remained a lifelong resident.
James graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1966. On August 10, 1968, he married Shirley Heath. James served in the US Army as an MP in Korea from May 6, 1969 until Dec 6, 1970. He also worked for Dodge for 32 years and Federal Mogul for 10 years until retirement.
James also enjoyed fishing with his brother-in-law Don Brown, until they were both unable to fish anymore. He also enjoyed watching Notre Dame Football, Chicago Bears Football and to torment his family, was an avid golf fan. He would watch it all the time to annoy everyone around him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Den Hurley and Tim Hurley.
Surviving in addition to his wife Shirley Hurley, are his children Michelle (Doug)Walls, Cheryl (Larry) Walls and Jennifer Catanzarite. His Grandchildren, Kaylee (Arias) Williams, Chelsey Walls, Hope Walls (Matt Boughner), Megan (Jose) Xolio, Emma Walls, Conner Catanzarite and Jessica (Cauffman) Danik (Kevin). And his Great Grandchildren, Kenai, Atlas and Aurora Williams, Lukas and baby on the way Xolio. Also, his siblings, Jack (Trish) Hurley, Tom (Pat) Hurley and Sue Hurley.
He was the best Dad, Papa and Great Papa there is. He loved his Grandkids and Great Grandkids so much!
Per James' request, there will be no visitation, and cremation has taken place. We will plan a celebration of life for a later date.
