Jesse Keltner Obituary

Jesse Allen Keltner, 91, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, in Plymouth, Indiana. Born on March 13, 1934, in Somerset, Kentucky, Jesse lived a life defined by honor, purpose, and service.

Jesse’s early years were shaped by resilience and determination. After losing his father at the age of nine, he took on the responsibilities of supporting his family. From delivering newspapers and handbills to working as an usher at the local theater and overnight shifts at a seed mill, Jesse’s industrious spirit shone through. His hard work paid off as he earned enough to fund his college education at Eastern Kentucky University. While there, he worked in the cafeteria and for ROTC and the National Guard. It was also during this time that he met Margie, his future wife of 69 years, in an American History class. Jesse often recounted how Margie’s eagerness to answer every question initially irked him but ultimately won his admiration

.
Jesse graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with degrees in accounting and military science and was awarded the American Legion Medal of Honor for his growth in ROTC. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. There, he taught artillery training with pride and dedication. His military service was a source of great pride throughout his life.

After completing his military service, Jesse pursued a master’s degree in education from Indiana University. He embarked on a distinguished 35-year career with Hammond Public Schools in Indiana, where he served as a teacher before becoming principal of several elementary schools, concluding his tenure at Harding Elementary School. Jesse was widely recognized for his innovative programs and efforts to foster parent involvement in education. The Hammond Area Reading Council honored him for promoting reading improvement—an achievement that reflected his lifelong commitment to learning and teaching.

In retirement, Jesse and Margie embraced life to the fullest. They spent 25 joyful years as “snowbirds” in Leesburg, Florida, before returning full-time to their cherished lake house at Lake Latonka in Plymouth in June of 2023. Jesse found peace and happiness walking the tree-lined grounds of their property and captaining the family pontoon boat—a role he relished as he taught his grandchildren to navigate the waters.

Jesse’s hobbies reflected his sharp mind and love of connection. He was an avid coin collector and a skilled player of checkers and Rook. A memorable moment for the family was when his oldest grandson defeated him at checkers for the first time—a cause for celebration that highlighted Jesse’s playful yet competitive spirit.

Above all else, Jesse was a devoted family man who held himself to the highest standards of integrity and hard work. He is survived by his beloved wife Margie Keltner; his daughter Karen (Michael) Karolzak of Valparaiso, Indiana; daughter-in-law Luann Keltner of Highland, Indiana; grandchildren Cody (Denise) Karolzak, Lucas Jesse (Diana) Karolzak, Mikaela Karolzak, Pastor Katie (Jimmy) Harbin, and Clay (Ashlyn) Keltner; as well as seven great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy. He was preceded in death by his son Kurt A. Keltner.

Jesse’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and perseverance. His wry sense of humor and unwavering commitment to family will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

As Morrie Schwartz once said: “Death ends a life, not a relationship. All the love you created is still there. All the memories are still there. You live on—in the hearts of everyone you have touched and nurtured while you were here.”
