Joan Mae Grimes

ELKHART-Joan M. Grimes, age 88, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, in Elkhart. Born on October 31, 1936, in Sullivan, Indiana, Joan was the daughter of the late Jesse and Mabel Gaines. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jon W. Grimes Sr., 2 stepdaughters, Julie and Nanette, and a sister, Millie Beeker.

  Joan is survived by her children: Jon W. Grimes Jr., Matthew W. Grimes, Nicole J. Grimes, and Margie Grimes-Adams; eleven cherished grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

  A 1954 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School, Joan retired from Key Bank in 1998 after many years of dedicated service. She was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Elkhart and a longtime volunteer at the Midwest Museum of American Art.

  Joan had a vibrant spirit and a deep love for life. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards, crocheting, and following horse racing. A devoted fan of Notre Dame Women’s Basketball, she rarely missed a game. She also found great joy in traveling the country by motorhome, often with ice cream in hand.

  Joan never met a stranger—she had an infectious warmth and a genuine love for people. Above all, she treasured time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no public services. A private family burial will take place.

  Joan will be remembered for her kindness, humor, and the joy she brought to everyone she met.

  Per her wishes cremation will take place and she will be laid to rest next to her husband. 

  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Midwest Museum of Art or to the Elkhart County Humane Society.

  Elkhart Cremation Services has been entrusted with her care.
