Lorraine C. Swope

Lorraine C. Swope, 81, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at the Center for Hospice Care-Raclin House in Mishawaka, Indiana. She was born on November 30, 1943, in South Bend, Indiana, to Theodore and Florence (Buczkowski) Zawierucha.

Lorraine married H.B. “Jack” Swope on December 14, 1968, and he preceded her in death on May 20, 2016. Surviving are children, Christine A. (Michael) Bayne, Laurie M. Day, Dawn M. (Jeremaine) Rice, Sonny E. (Jessica) Swope, all of South Bend, IN; stepson, Jack L. (Laura) Swope of South Bend, IN; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two siblings, Jeanette M. Zwierzynski of South Bend, and John M. (Lois) Zawierucha of Traverse City, MI; a sister-in-law, Betty Rainwater of South Bend; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; step granddaughter, Jillian Swope; sister, Elaine Jerzak; stepson, Daniel Swope; stepdaughter, Maria Swope; and two nephews, Ryan Zawierucha and Richard Harrell, Jr.

Lorraine graduated from Central High School in South Bend in 1957. She enjoyed going to the Four Winds Casino, camping, fishing and was an avid Notre Dame women’s basketball fan. She retired as a machinist.

The family would like to extend a special THANK YOU to the staff on the 7th floor at Memorial Hospital; the caregivers at the Center for Hospice Care-Raclin House; VNA Home Care staff; as well as her grandson, Rusty Day, who put his college career on hold to help care for Lorraine.

Cremation will take place, and a celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date. Elkhart Cremation Services has been entrusted with her care.
