Marian Hostetler Obituary

Marian Esther Hostetler, 94, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026 in Goshen, IN. She was born in Orrville, OH, on February 9, 1932, to Harry Mervin Hostetler and Esther Ellen Hostetler.

Marian will be remembered for her Christian commitment, shown through mission work, teaching, generous sharing of time and money, and her fierce independence. She is survived by her sisters, Doris (James) Miller and Beth (Lee Roy Jr.) Berry, 11 nieces and nephews, and many other family members. She was predeceased by her parents and sister Twila (Myrl) Nafziger.

From 1961–1970, Marian served as a Mennonite mission worker in Algeria, a period spanning the end of the Algerian War and the early post-independence years. She noted this time to be the highlight of her life. Her time in Algeria involved teaching English as a second language, providing girls' religious education, and mentoring women in sewing as a source of income. Marian authored youth fiction with international and peace-focused themes, and a nonfiction work that documented the challenges of those who served in Algeria during the 1950s–1970s. Recurring themes in her life story were long-term cross-cultural Christian presence, women's and girls' education, and bridge-building between Mennonites and Muslims.

She was a lifelong learner who continued to learn and teach throughout her life.  Between periods of mission work and service, she taught elementary school for 18 years at Concord Community Schools and learned to paint.  She made paintings for family and friends, as well as two full-wall murals.

She donated her extensive slide collection to the Mennonite Archival Information Database, including photos from her extensive service and travel in Algeria, Chad, Djibouti, Israel, Nepal, Kenya, Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Syria, India, Egypt, Cyprus, Carthage, Benin, Somalia, and the Hopi Nation.

A gathering of family and friends will take place at Belmont Mennonite Church (925 Oxford Street), Elkhart, IN, on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at 9:30AM followed by a memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Marian's honor may be made to Belmont Mennonite Church or Mennonite Mission Network.
