Maureen Newman Lorman Obituary

Maureen Medlen Newman Lorman, 66, born on May 28, 1957, in Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on February 8, 2024, in Granger, Indiana, her home of 25 years. Maureen, or Grandma Bama, as she cherished being called, loved so many. Her family was especially important to her, and she also held close her dear friends.

Throughout her life, Maureen expressed herself through poetry and shared life’s simple beauty and special moments through her gift of writing. Teaching and positively impacting children brought Maureen deep pride and fulfillment. Her love for teaching inspired her to complete two master’s degrees, both in education, from Indiana University South Bend. She pursued her love of education and teaching all while being a wife, mother, daughter, sister, and cancer patient and survivor. She also loved gardening, capturing nature through photography, and cheering on Alabama football. Even after more than two decades in Indiana, she held onto her love of being raised in Alabama, from her accent to her cooking.

Maureen is survived by sons Tyler Lorman (Lacey), Dustin Lorman, and TJ Lorman (Charmane); daughter Kay Wright (Randy); grandchildren Jamie Wright, Keenya Thornton, Silas Lorman, Cambrie Lorman, Kaia Lord, Opal Lorman, Laraina Darby, Andrew Darby, Kalli Lorman, Payton Lorman, and Gunner Lorman; great-grandchildren Brantleigh Wright, Braylon Wright, Carter Thornton, Cole Thornton, and Cooper Thornton; siblings Dy’Adra Medlen, Michael Medlen (Emily), Elizabeth Justice (Thomas), Allen Frazier Medlen, Jr. (Teresa), Christine Peppers Duggan, Pamela Sasser (James), and Frederick Medlen (Cindy); many dear nieces and nephews; and wonderful friends.

Maureen was preceded in death by her parents Allen Medlen and Mary Ryan Medlen; sisters Catherine Marie Medlen and Barbara Mostert; brother Donald Medlen; brother-in-law Steve Peppers, husbands Bobby Newman (1936-1997) and Tom Lorman (1956-2010); daughters Kim Bazzell and Karen Ingram; and her beloved dog, Waggs.

Memorial services will be held in Granger, Indiana, and Montgomery, Alabama, with arrangements to be announced at a later date.
