Rebecca Martinczak Obituary

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.  – 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

Rebecca B. (Torzewski) Martinczak was called to her eternal heavenly home on April 27, 2024.   Rebecca was born on March 11, 1955 in South Bend, IN to the late Modest and Velma (Sabo) Torzewski. On June 30, 1979, she married Gordon Martinczak, her beloved husband of 44 years, who survives.  Also surviving are their three loving children, Kelly Martinczak of Warsaw, IN; Paul (Valerie Borden) Martinczak of Grand Haven, MI; and Kimberly (Daniel) Battams of London, England; grandchildren Nathan & Nicholas, and Alaina Martinczak; and sister Diana Morris.

Rebecca was a lifelong resident of South Bend.  She was a graduate of Marian High School, class of 1973 and continued on to Indiana-Purdue University Indianapolis, IN earning her BS in Nursing in 1977.  She was employed by Memorial Hospital of South Bend, where she dedicated 40 years of her life to helping others in the oncology department.

Rebecca did everything for her family. As a mom, she selflessly provided love and support. When she became a grandmother (Yai-Yai), she was on top of the world. She was ever present in her grandchildren’s lives, making a lifetime of memories. Rebecca adored her fur baby, Piper.  She also loved nature and enjoyed frequent walks in Potato Creek State Park almost daily with her husband and dogs. She loved the Beatles. She was able to see Ringo Star and Paul McCartney in concert and also visit Liverpool.

Rebecca was a beautiful person inside and out.  Everyone who knew her, loved her.  The world was a better place with her in it.  She was a loving daughter, a faithful partner, a reliable sister, a devoted mother and a true friend to many.  Rebecca lived 69 beautiful years and has now moved on to walk with Jesus and the loved ones who went before her.  She will be eternally missed.

Rebecca attended St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church.  A memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church, 1601 W. Sample Street, South Bend, IN 46619 at 11:00 am EST on Saturday, May 11, 2024. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service.
