Rex Richards Obituary

Rex Richards, 81, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on June 27, 2026, while holding the hand of his beloved wife, Laura. He was born on October 16, 1944, in Wolflake, Indiana.

Rex shared 37 wonderful years of marriage with Laura Richards. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and unwavering commitment to one another. Their marriage was a beautiful example of devotion, partnership, and selfless care.

Rex was the proud father of Nancy Misener, David (Deanna) Richards, Jennifer Martinez, Toni Hummel, Sydney Mais, and bonus son Billy Hummel. He also lovingly raised his granddaughter, Riley Lloyd, whom he loved as one of his own. He was a cherished grandfather to 13 total grandchildren, a proud great-grandfather to three great-grandchildren, and was also blessed with many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brothers, Ron Richards and Roger Richards; his sister-in-law, Elisha Richards; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy Richards; his stepdaughter, Stephanie Lloyd; his sister, Mary Lou Richards; and his brothers, Rick Richards and Robert Richards.

Rex will be remembered as one of the most hardworking, patient, and caring men anyone could know - as close to perfect as a man can be. He had a deep love for classic cars, old westerns, and a good joke. Whether someone needed a helping hand, to borrow a tool, or simply someone to listen, Rex was always there without hesitation. His quiet strength, gentle spirit, and generous heart left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Throughout his career, Rex worked at Tom's Auto Salvage, Whitehall Laboratories, and Universal Forest Products. He took great pride in his work and was respected for his dedication, reliability, and strong work ethic.

In keeping with Rex's wishes, no formal funeral services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Rex's memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, honoring his courageous journey with Parkinson's disease and supporting the search for a cure.

Rex's greatest legacy is the family he loved unconditionally and the countless lives he touched through his kindness, humility, and generosity. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
