Robert D West

Robert D. West, Sr., (Bob) 96, of 23701 Wilshire Blvd., Elkhart, passed from this life after a short illness at 8:22 a.m. on October 8, 2023. Robert was born in Elkhart, Indiana, on April 6, 1927, to the parents of Earl and Neva West. Robert graduated from Concord High School in 1944. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in WW2 until the conclusion of the war. After his service in the Navy, Robert owned and operated West Auto Body Shop until his retirement. Robert married the love of his life, Marilyn J. Mann, on June 22, 1952. Marilyn passed on to her reward on April 10, 2000. Robert and Marilyn had three children, Elizabeth Cobb (Robert), and Robert D. West, Jr. (Carol Sue). James E. West, his youngest son, preceded him in death in 2004. Robert is survived by three grandchildren, Molly Kelly (Kevin), Nathan Robert West, (Moriah) and Raymond West, and four great grandchildren, Jacob Robert Rowe, Allison Fedoruk, Liberty West, and Jubilee West. Robert had a passion for airplanes and flying which he undoubtedly received from his father Earl West. While he did fly a G-NCUB for a short time, he began building and flying radio control airplanes from the time he was in high school. He continued his hobby of radio control airplanes until very late in his life. After his beloved Marilyn passed, he learned to ballroom dance and met a lot of wonderful friends during that time. In the last few years Robert took piano lessons and thoroughly enjoyed his time doing it. He was also blessed to have several veteran friends to meet for breakfast during the week. Words cannot express how very loved he was and what a great honor it is to call him our father. A family and friends celebration of life will be planned at a later date
