Robert “Bob” Newland, 81, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born August 30, 1944, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Bob was the son of Robert and Helen (Brown) Newland. On June 1, 2001, he was united in marriage to Karen (Kline) Montgomery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Tom Newland, and his granddaughter Tiffany Ritter.
Bob proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1964–1966. He later worked as a member of Pipe Fitters Local 669, until his retirement in 2001. He formed lifelong friendships and earned the respect of everyone he worked with. He was known as “Uncle Bob” by his coworkers.
His best friend Tries, (Vic Triesenburg) shared endless stories from “back in the day” when they hunted, fished and many other things boys do.
Bob never met a stranger. His humor, quick wit, and endless supply of nicknames made him unforgettable. He had a way of making people feel welcome, and he loved to make others laugh. His coworkers knew that if you were late, he’d make sure it was written in his planner for all to see—always with a grin. He was the kind of man who brought joy into every room. He had a love for the outdoors, hunting, and fishing were his favorite pastimes. He found a love for bowhunting later in life, that ended up being his favorite way to hunt, he loved the challenge.
Bob is survived by his wife, Karen; his son Michael Newland of Goshen; his daughter Lisa Laubach of Edwardsburg; stepdaughter Shelly Powell of Goshen; and stepson Joe (Jenn) Montgomery of Goshen. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Katie Newland of Dowagiac; Chase Newland of Hastings; Taneshia Ritter and Jason Ragsdale of Goshen; and Abby aka The Dutch and Katie aka Katie Bug Montgomery of Goshen; Macey and Shelby aka Squeeky Laubach of Edwardsburg. He leaves behind several great‑grand-children, Malikkii aka The Worm Ritter, Daltin aka Ten Pound Head Slabach, Ezekiel aka Snitch 1, Jakobey aka Snitch 2 Ragsdale, KaiDyn Ragsdale, Violet Russom.
