Shirley Lee DeWitt Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley L. DeWitt, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.  Who left this world peacefully in her home on May 3, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. 


Shirley was born on September 5, 1938, to John and Nora Wregglesworth.  She grew up in a household filled with love and laughter, along with her brothers John, Duane, and Raymond, and her sister, Patricia. 


On May 28, 1959, Shirley married the love of her life, Jack DeWitt.  They were blessed to have been married for 59 years.  Shirley joined her husband Jack in Germany, while he was serving in the US Army.  In 1963, they embarked on a new chapter of their lives when they established DeWitt’s Shell Service.  They became a cornerstone in Buchanan for 27 years. 


Shirley, lead Cub Scouts, coached floor hockey and took great pleasure in attending all her children’s events. Shirley enjoyed going to auctions and going to the casino for her birthday.  Shirley and Jack loved being at their lake cottage and camping with family. Family was the most important thing to Shirley, and she cherished her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews


Shirley  was a devoted mother to Darren (Kimberly), Darryl (Loretta), Darrick and Suzan.  Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren Darrick (Jasmine), Kyle (Brooke), Aaron, and Carl (Emily) Case.  As well as her great-grandchildren, Norah, Audrey, and Jackson. Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jack, her son Darrick, her parents, and her brothers. 


A Celebration of Life Service will be held graveside Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan, Michigan, where Shirley will be laid to rest beside her beloved Jack.


The DeWitt family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff members of Heartland Hospice and Home Instead. The tender care they provided ensured Shirley's comfort and peace during her final journey.  Her warmth and kindness will be deeply missed by family and friends.


In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Heartland Hospice, 230 W. Catalpa Ste. D., Mishawaka IN, 46454.  Their compassionate care allowed Shirley to spend her final days at home, surrounded by those she loved.  Those wishing to send condolences online may do so at www.elkhartcremation.com.
