Verna "Lucy" L Russell

Verna L. “Lucy” Russell, 87, of South Bend, IN passed away peacefully at home May 10,2025 after a brief but valiant battle with cancer. She was born May 17,1937 in Woodbury,TN to the late C. Paul Barrett and Mary K. (Fann) Barrett. Also preceding her in death are her husband of 64 years,James Russell, a son Steven Russell of Elkhart,IN, two brothers, Chuck Barrett of Elkhart,IN and Clyde Barrett of Bristol, IN and a sister Marie (Barrett) Checkley of Blissfield, MI.
Lucy graduated from Elkhart High School in 1955,and married her high school sweetheart in 1956. She is survived by her children, Kathleen Russell of South Bend,IN; Michael (Carrie) Russell of Carlton,GA;Elizabeth (JD) Watrous of Fishers, IN, and sister Joyce (Bill) Mitchell of Pearland,TX. Survivors also include grandchildren Mariah Trench of Edgewater ,CO;Jacob (Emily) Watrous of Noblesville ,IN; P. Hunter Watrous of Noblesville ,IN; M. Hannah Watrous of Fishers ,IN; great-granddaughter Addy Watrous of Noblesville, IN, and many extended relatives. Lucy loved being a grandmother and was delighted when a great-granddaughter was born in 2019. She enjoyed gardening and jigsaw puzzles and was an avid bowler for many years on a league team. Spending most of their lives in Elkhart, Lucy and husband Jim always enjoyed time spent with friends and family. Per Lucy’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and no funeral services will be held. Elkhart Cremation Services is assisting the family with final arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Center for Hospice Care.
