Virginia Mawhorter Obituary

Virginia Mae Mawhorter, age 87, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 5, 2024. She was born December 22, 1936 in Elkhart County, Indiana to Joseph and M. Katherine Shaum.

Virginia was employed by Taylor Products for over two decades until it closed permanently. She enjoyed the next 30 plus years as a home healthcare provider, including many years caring for her grandson Philip Martin.

Virginia’s truest joy was in her Lord. She loved spending time in God’s Word and in communion with her Savior. Passionately sharing her love and faith in Jesus with others, she longed that all would know Him. She delighted in every conversation about Jesus, His work in her and others lives, and Christ’s soon second-coming.

Virginia adored her family and wanted nothing more than for each one to have a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. She encouraged her loved ones to trust in God and follow Him with their whole lives and celebrated with each one in their faith.

Taking great pleasure in her grandchildren, she has enjoyed taking them to church, always out to eat, and when she could on trips to see God’s creation, such as Niagara Falls and the Great Smoky Mountains.

Additionally, she loved being generous to all. Any time she heard of a need, she was ready to fill it and give sacrificially. She faithfully gave to her church and financially supported many Christian organizations regularly. Her heart to bless others was widely evident as she gave to friends, family, and strangers alike.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Katherine Shaum, brother Clifford Shaum, sisters Gwendolyn Shaum and Thelma Havens, son Philip (Sonny) Hathaway, and grandsons Joshua and Justin Wenger.

Virginia is survived by her brothers Donald (Nancy) Shaum and Gordon Shaum, her four daughters Angela Wenger, Connie Dean, Tamela Mawhorter, and Kathy Doody (Shawn), and 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and her first great-great grandchild expected soon.

Family and friends are invited to join in Virginia’s graveside memorial service on Monday, March 18th at 11:30am at Violett Cemetery, 2818 Violett Rd, Goshen, IN 46526.

Her family will miss her presence in their lives but rejoice knowing she is pain-free and full of joy and peace in Heaven. She longed for her heavenly home and surely is celebrating now as she has begun her new eternal and beautiful journey with her beloved Savior and Lord.

John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.”
